About John Flanagan

John Flanagan is a devotee of melody and meaning. His music pulses and shimmers with childlike honesty and sage-like wisdom. His latest album Manhood Method Actor brings to life the soulful folk-rock sound of the 70s, taking inspiration from the likes of Jackson Browne, CSNY and Bonnie Raitt. Lyrically the album traverses various themes of love, conflict, parenthood, masculinity and coming of age. The album hit #3 on the AIR ‘100% Independent’ charts putting him alongside The Waifs and Midnight Oil and also hit #3 on the AMRAP metro radio charts.

“He’s hitting with the groove like a Balboa punching bag! You can definitely hear that retro soulful twang.” (Henry Wagons - Double J)

Flanagan is a festival favourite, and rightly so. Sepia-toned stories on the widescreen of now; toe-tapping singalongs to mend your broken heart. He has been described as “one of Australia’s finest lyricists” (Timber & Steel) garnering praise at home and abroad:

“Flanagan’s thoughtful songwriting and James Taylor-esque vocals land warm and familiar on the ears” –Rhythms Magazine

Flanagan has released 4 albums and has fronted a variety of band line ups. Sometimes he sounds like 70s soul, sometimes a bluegrass trio or a protest march anthem. Foremost he is a songwriter and storyteller with the ability to move an audience to tears and have them dancing with joy all in the same set. This year he has been touring with his 7-piece band around Australia’s East Coast in support of his new album.
